National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements for the United States.
Central Green Park Hispanic Heritage Month events:
Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15, 2023-October 15, 2023, but Katy's celebrations will begin THIS Saturday, September 9, in Central Green Park (located in LaCenterra.) The park is set to host five free events showcasing the sights, sounds, and flavors of the Hispanic culture:
- Saturday, September 9, 2023: Live Music with Nueva Vida, 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
- Friday, September 15, 2023: La Flor Symphony, 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
- Sunday, September 17, 2023: El Sistema Texas, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
- Friday, September 22, 2023: Movie Night “Ferdinand,” (Dusk)
- Saturday, October 7, 2023: Venezuelan Festival, 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Katymagazineonline.com interviewed Yvonne Arceneaux, Willow Fork Drainage District’s Park Director, about the upcoming Venezuelan Festival, which will also be a celebration of Central Green Park’s 10th Birthday. The event is going to be a day filled with vibrant culture, delicious food, and incredible performances.
“We celebrate five cultures a year, and our birthday bash always has a theme. There is a large population of Venezuelans in Katy, who bring a lot of joy, energy and fun to our community. We want to share their love for life with everyone. We invite everyone to come together and experience the rich heritage of Venezuela. This is a chance for the community to connect, celebrate, and create lasting memories.”
The rain date for the Venezuelan Festival is scheduled for October 16, 2023.

The Library will host a special performance by the Lynx Trio who will be presenting an engaging program of music that celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. Join this unique ensemble as they explore the colorful sounds and exciting rhythms of chamber music from Latin America. Featured on the program is a brand-new work by composer Alejandro Basulto that features musical motifs from his home of Yucatán, Mexico. In this family-friendly program, the musicians will introduce the music and bring all the wonderful cultural elements to life! The performance will be followed by crafts and activities for children. Refreshments will be served!

The Plaza at Avenida Houston will come alive Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 6-9 p.m. with Latin and Mexican Regional Music in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Presented by Houston First Corporation (HFC), Party on the Plaza is free and open to the public as part of the organization’s recognition and appreciation of the contributions of Latinos and Hispanic Americans.
This year’s featured artist is SHEKERE Band, directed by singer and musician Agustin Nava who combines his Venezuelan roots with his American influence. Nava trained as a young child on the Cuatro Venezolano (a traditional Venezuelan guitar), playing his version of Spanish pop rock. From Latin to funk to disco, this entertaining group does it all and is ready to please the audience with their creative vocal and musical talents!
Grupo Vadenagi, will kick off the evening with performances of Mexican Norteño music, a traditional music genre of the Northern Mexico region with roots in a mixture of Mexican, Spanish and Germanic styles.
In addition to live music, Avenida de las Americas street will be closed to traffic as Houston First Corporation partners with Discovery Green to bring Flea by Night, an open-air market featuring local artisans and small businesses selling a variety of goods. Visitors will be able to discover new handmade, recycled, repurposed, local goods as well as enjoy free live music at Party on the Plaza.
